Our history

KZN Catering Equipment began in Durban in 2007 and has grown through practical kitchen planning, careful installation and dependable after-sales support. From the original business to today, the work has stayed focused on commercial kitchens that must function day after day in KwaZulu-Natal conditions.

2007: A Durban business with a clear purpose

KZN Catering Equipment started in 2007 in Glen Anil, Durban, serving restaurants, hospitals, schools and canteens that needed proper food-service planning, not just a few loose pieces of equipment. From the start, the business was built around kitchen layouts, equipment specification and the supply of cooking, food-prep, storage and refrigeration equipment for real operating kitchens.

Those early years were shaped by local conditions. Kitchens in Durban and along the North Coast had to deal with heat, humidity, salt air and power interruptions, so equipment choice and room layout mattered as much as the price tag. The company’s role was to help clients avoid poor airflow, cramped prep lines and refrigeration problems that can cost time and stock.

  • Started in Glen Anil, serving Durban and nearby areas.
  • Focused on commercial kitchen design and supply from day one.
  • Built around practical advice for South African site conditions.

2008 to 2011: Building the way projects were handled

As the business grew, it moved beyond supply alone and into a more complete project service. Site surveys became a regular part of the process, because a kitchen only works when measurements, drainage, power points, gas positions and service access are checked before equipment is ordered. This phase also brought more extractor planning and stainless fabrication work, especially for busy production kitchens and healthcare facilities.

By this stage, the company was working with clients who needed one point of contact from concept through to handover. That meant drawings, equipment lists, clear timelines and a better understanding of municipal and site rules. In Durban and Pietermaritzburg alike, a kitchen plan that misses access doors or ventilation details can create delays and extra cost.

  • Site surveys became part of normal project delivery.
  • Extractor planning and stainless fabrication were added to support larger installs.
  • Projects were managed with tighter attention to services, access and compliance.

2012 to 2014: Expansion across KwaZulu-Natal

During these years, the business took on more work across KwaZulu-Natal, including Durban North, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg. The kinds of clients also widened. A hospital kitchen needs dependable holding temperatures and easy-clean finishes. A canteen needs throughput and sensible staff movement. A restaurant needs equipment that can keep up during peak service without wasting power or floor space.

The team’s growing experience meant that layouts were not drawn in isolation. Priya Naidoo led kitchen design with the practical realities of installation in mind, while Siyabonga Mkhize handled projects so that equipment ordering, fabrication and site dates stayed aligned. This period also confirmed that good planning saves money later, especially when load shedding, coastal corrosion and maintenance access are all part of the job.

  • Work expanded from Durban into multiple KZN service areas.
  • More specialised layouts were prepared for hospitals, restaurants and canteens.
  • Design and project management started working as one process.

2015 to 2017: A stronger support model for long-term kitchens

By 2015, clients were asking for more than installation. They wanted reliable support after handover, regular maintenance and help when a unit failed at the wrong time. That is when the service side became more structured, with preventive maintenance schedules, breakdown repairs and staff training becoming a bigger part of the business. A kitchen runs better when the people using it know how to keep it clean, safe and efficient.

In these years the company kept the same Durban base and the same focus on food-service facilities. That continuity mattered to clients who wanted a supplier with local experience, not a fly-by-night operation that disappears after the first order.

  • After-sales support grew into a formal service offering.
  • Preventive maintenance helped clients reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Staff training became part of better kitchen performance.

2018 to 2020: A more complete technical team

As the company matured, the team behind the work became more clearly defined. Mandla Sibusiso Dlamini led the business as Managing Director, with Priya Naidoo on kitchen design, Siyabonga Mkhize on projects, Annelise van Wyk on procurement, Luyanda Zungu on service and Jared Pillay on site installation. That structure allowed the company to handle a project from first survey to final commissioning without losing track of details.

Procurement became especially important in this period because equipment availability and delivery timing can hold up an entire kitchen. Coastal humidity, storage conditions and daily cleaning routines all affect how long equipment lasts, so specification had to be done carefully. It was not enough to choose a machine that looks suitable, it had to suit the actual site and the people who would use it.

2021 to today: The same local base, with a wider reach

Today, KZN Catering Equipment continues from its Glen Anil base in Durban, serving customers across Durban North, Umhlanga, Pinetown, Ballito and Pietermaritzburg. The business still works on kitchen layouts, equipment specification, site surveys, extractor planning, stainless fabrication, installation, commissioning, preventive maintenance, breakdown repairs and staff training, but with more years of practical experience behind each decision.

What has stayed the same is the approach. The team listens to how the kitchen must work, checks the site properly and specifies equipment that suits South African operating conditions, including load shedding and high-use environments. That is why many clients come back when they open a new branch, refurbish a serving area or need help with a failing unit that cannot wait till next week.
